Getting a Work Permit to work in Ireland?

IRELANDIrish law makes it easy for people from the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, and the UK to find work. Most of the time, you don't need a separate work permit to do your job.

If you are not from the EEA, however, you will usually need a valid work permit from the DETE before you can start working in Ireland.

What are the main type of permissions required for the Ireland Work Permit?

There are several kinds of work permits in Ireland, and each one is made for a certain kind of job. These two are what most people use:

  • Critical Stream - This is a permit for people with a lot of skills who work in fields that are in high demand, like tech, engineering, and healthcare. For most jobs, applicants need a job offer and a certain amount of money (€38,000 if your job is on the critical skills list and more if it's not).
  • Labour market - With this type of permit, you can do more jobs that aren't on the list of "ineligible occupations." There are, however, some extra requirements that must be met, such as the "labour market needs test" (proof that there was no suitable EEA candidate) and often a minimum salary.

There are also permits for things like moving within the same company, internships, service contracts, and more.

How to use it and important steps for  getting the  Ireland work permit?

Get a job offer from an Irish company. This is something that most permit applications will not be accepted without.

Find out what kind of permit you need for your job (e.g., General, Critical Skills).

  • A signed contract, information about how the boss's business is registered, a job description, salary information, and a list of relevant qualifications are some of the things that you and your boss make.
  • Send in the permit application through DETE's Employment Permits Online system. You should apply at least 12 weeks before the job starts.
  • After getting your permit, you will need to apply for the right Irish visa (short stay "C" or long stay "D") if you are from a country that needs one.
  • You might need to register with the Irish immigration authorities if you plan to stay longer than a certain amount of time.

It's possible that you'll need to show that your job isn't on a list of jobs that aren't allowed and that the job was advertised to see how many people in the local job market were interested in it.  If you want to go the Critical Skills route, you usually need to make more money. It's not as important for General Permits, but the minimum salary is still important.  Most of the time, the permit is linked to a certain company and job function. You might need to get a new permit if you change jobs or roles.

A General Employment Permit lets a lot of people work legally for a certain amount of time. Such as, they might be able to get a "Stamp 4" after five years that lets them work without a permit.

How does this work in Ireland?

The employment permit system in Ireland is meant to be fair. It should bring in people with the skills that the economy needs, but it should also protect the job opportunities of Irish and EEA citizens. Without a job offer and meeting salary and "needs test" requirements, people from outside the EEA cannot move to the UK. In this way, the system makes sure that people move to places that need them.

It's important to find a job in Ireland before you try to move there for work. Your boss should be willing and able to help you get the permit. Lead times can last for weeks, so be ready for them and make sure you have all the paperwork you need. Picking the right kind of permit is very important. In some ways, the Critical Skills route is better, like making it easier to get longer-term residency. But it's also harder to get a job and make more money. Always check the DETE website or official guidance to find out the most recent rules.
