All  you need to know about Post-Graduate Work Permits (PGWP0

CANADAForeign based students can obtain Post-Graduate Work Permits (PGWP) while completing their studies in Canadian programs. PGWP allows them to work for any employer, without limits on work hours, anywhere in Canada.

The PGWP is valid for 8 months to 3 years, offering an excellent opportunity to gain Canadian work experience. This makes it easy for the applicants to later apply for a PR visa through the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) stream of the Express Entry Program. After acquiring Canadian work experience, applicants can conveniently  work in the Canadian market and also switch jobs as per their preference. It is the best way to integrate oneself into the industry soon after finishing the education.

Understanding the Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP):

PGWP is for international students who have graduated from a designated Canadian learning institution.

  • It serves as a pathway to obtain a Canadian Work Permit.
  • These are open work permits ranging from 8 months to 3 years. The duration of the PGWP is aligned with the course length. For part-time studies, the PGWP length is adjusted according to full-time study hours.
  • Not all Canadian programs qualify for PGWP, so it's essential to check eligibility before applying.
  • No Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is required for this visa.

What are the Eligibility Criteria for PGWP?

Eligibility Criteria for PGWP:

  • The candidate must have pursued an 8-month program (full-time equivalent) in Canada.
  • Minimum age requirement is 18.
  • Education must be from a Designated Learning Institution.
  • Application for PGWP should be within 180 days of course completion.
  • If applying from within Canada, a valid status of stay is necessary.
  • In cases where the study permit has expired, the applicant must hold a visitor status before applying for PGWP.
  • Eligible educational levels include:
  • Public post-secondary schools (colleges, universities, technical schools).
  • Private post-secondary schools with public school-equivalent rules.
  • Post-secondary schools offering 900 hours or longer qualifying programs.
  • Canadian private schools authorized to award degrees under provincial law, to study program enrollees.

How much is the processing time for PGWP?

PGWP Processing Time:

  • The processing time ranges from 80 to 180 days. Applicants can work in Canada during this period if they have valid stay status.
  • Applicants can apply for PGWP from overseas within 180 days of completing their studies, though additional documentation may be required.

The processing time can vary as per the latest immigration trends and the specific case as well.
